If you grew up in Upper Manhattan or the Bronx, you know all about the legendary Delicioso Coco Helado stands. This is our ode to the irresistible icey treats. It was inspired by our friend Rowan Ricardo Phillips' poem, itself a tribute to the swirling colors and meta-linguistic play of the summer snack.

It was a no-brainer to us to invite Rowan to spit his lines over the track. Rowan himself says: "The tune and the poem share so much synergy, so much mutual love, that I’ve lost track completely of which came first. The two really are chicken and egg in a beautiful dance. I’ll be forever grateful that we did this collaboration."

The tune starts with what Bobby Sanabria, in his liner notes, calls "something I’ve never heard a boogaloo band do–a rhythm known as bembé (a ritual rhythm in 6/8 meter from Yoruba tradition)," which morphs into a cha-cha, soon commandeered by the dual lead vocals of Paloma Muñoz and Mariella Price.

As a bonus, Rowan brought his then-5-year-old daughter Imogen with him to the studio, and as our jefe JG had his then-5-year-old daughter Charlie with him, we put the kids on the mic to add extra flavor to the recipe. And then when bassist Rafael Gomez's then-4-year-old daughter Maia came by to pick him up, we added her.

lyrics

Coco Helado

Coco
Coco helado
Delicioso
Coco helado

If you want it
Come and get it
C'mon baby
Si tu queres

Coco Helado!

En el barrio
Cuando caminando
En el barrio
el verano pasado

What they were sellin'
You know I'm buyin'
They had me going
Without even tryin'

Coco Helado!

If you want it
Come and get it
C'mon baby
Don't ya sweat it
Si tu queres
Come and get it
Y ustedes
Don't ya sweat it

Coco Helado!
